Western Union Business Solutions offers bursaries and endowments for international students. While their population is increasing on campuses across the globe, financial aid for this group is less prevalent and obtaining the necessary funds can be tremendously difficult.

Everyday, our financial network connects educators with students across the globe to facilitate the easy transfer of funds for tuition and other fees. It’s a valuable service and we’re proud to play a small part in the journey of these scholars. Individuals come from all around the world to study at renowned institutions. From tiny villages to bustling cities, each leaves the comfort of their home to embark on a new adventure. It’s an enormous step and one that can come at a steep financial cost. In general, tuition is more expensive for international attendees and their local currency can be worth significantly less than their host country’s money.

It’s impossible to work in this field and not feel a deep respect for those brave enough to pursue their education in the face of such challenges. For this reason, Western Union Business Solutions began offering bursaries and endowments for international students. While their population is increasing on campuses across the globe, financial aid for this group is less prevalent and obtaining the necessary funds can be tremendously difficult.

Last year, we awarded a bursary to a young student from McGill University and were surprised to receive a heartfelt note of gratitude. The bursary recipient was pursuing a Masters degree in Public Health with plans to begin medical school. He revealed that he was struggling financially and was juggling a job alongside his tough coursework. The strain was becoming so unmanageable that he feared he would soon have to give up his studies.  As a former Haitian refugee, he spoke passionately about his desire to complete his education and become a doctor. The student expressed his sincere appreciation for the award, which allowed him to continue with his degree and reached him just in time.

More recently, a budding engineer from Centennial College was awarded this year’s Western Union New Canadian Scholarship award. Chong Kim, a 2nd year Electrical Engineering Technology student, was given the prize based on his impressive GPA. The hardworking young man spoke candidly of the financial toll of student life and the difficulty in paying for both tuition and living expenses independently. Though he already maintains high grades in his coursework, he is determined to use the financial gift as a catalyst to push himself even further.

It is humbling to have the opportunity to contribute to the continued success of such promising students. It is also a reminder of the vibrant and valuable person behind every transaction. This year, we are increasing the number of awarded scholarships to help even more students pursue their education and achieve their dream.
